Checkmate Fire won a competitive tender to deliver comprehensive fire stopping and compartmentation solutions at the St Helier Hospital Ferguson Building and Epsom General Hospital Headley wing.

The areas covered were the basement, laundry, pharmacy and storage at St Helier Hospital, and the lower basement at Epsom General Hospital.

Considerations

Working in a hospital environment presents a number of key challenges which must be properly managed to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors, and prevent any disruption to daily operations.

Checkmate Fire’s passive fire protection specialists have extensive experience of working within live hospitals, so carefully considered challenges regarding working in busy staff areas, limited access, security and cross contamination.

Approach

Checkmate’s compliance team had previously conducted a site survey in both properties, assessing all aspects of fire compartmentation. Our remediation team then used marked up drawings produced during initial survey to devise the programme of works, taking into consideration all of the above challenges.

Scope of Work

Prior to commencement of the project, we held planning meetings with the Trust’s onsite project management team to determine:

  • Which areas of the hospitals should be prioritised
  • What the main health & safety concerns were, and the most appropriate and effective way to work around these
  • Logistics and timescales for programme delivery, specifically regarding the St Helier Hospital pharmacy where we would have no access to the area on delivery days.

At Epsom General Hospital, the project focused on general remediation, repairing compartmentation breaches and fire doors in the lower basement staff area. Whereas at St Helier Hospital, we installed an Alufire fire-rated glazed screen and door between the staircase and open staff area to improve the fire integrity of the property while maintaining an open and modern appearance to the space.

Outcomes

By installing high-performance fire doors and fire-resistant glazing, Checkmate Fire repaired a number of breached compartments in each hospital.

Thorough pre-planning and regular client contact throughout delivery of the programme ensured that these improvements to both buildings’ fire integrity were achieved without causing disruption to the daily operations of the hospitals.
