Checklist for the Correct Specification & Application of Intumescent Paint

Intumescent Coating Specification Implications
An overview of points to consider; suitable products, correct application, compliance & certification.

Products must be suitable.

Incorrect DFT (dry film thickness) design means you will NOT achieve the desired specification. Factors effecting DFT are:

  • Fire resistance period
  • Steel profile and section size
  • Use – beam/column/bracing
  • Nature of exposure to fire
  • Environmental (internal / external)
  • Floor design / construction – decking type – holorib/bison
  • Cellular web openings
  • Incorrect application also means non compliance with the specification
  • Look for steel wet film checks
  • Compliance needs to be proven – an auditable trial
  • Always ask for a copy of marked drawings or a detailed schedule showing the thicknesses applied to each steel section
  • Ensure compatibility checks are carried out
